Where it came from
Alexi, Zephyr Mage was released in 2000 as part of the Prophecy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Prophecy was designed to explore themes of resource management and momentum, featuring mechanics that often punished players for having too many untapped lands. As a legendary creature, Alexi represents the high-magic fantasy aesthetic that characterized the early years of the game, serving as a powerful utility card for blue-aligned decks.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Ray Lago. Lago, known for his work across several trading card sets in the late 1990s and early 2000s, employed a vibrant, painterly style to capture Alexi’s command over wind and elemental forces. While the card is often remembered by players for its specific mechanics involving discarding cards to return creatures to an owner's hand, its design reflects the era's focus on creating distinct, flavor-rich legends that could serve as cornerstones for casual deck-building.
