Where it came from
Alexi's Cloak was released in 1999 as part of the Prophecy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the concept of sacrifice and resource management, with many cards offering powerful effects in exchange for a temporary or permanent loss of assets. This specific card was created to serve as an equipment-like utility, drawing inspiration from the set's thematic focus on balancing tactical advantage with the costs of magical influence.
The illustration for the card was provided by artist Eric Peterson, who captured the ethereal and mysterious nature of the garment. The design reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent during the late 1990s in the trading card game industry, emphasizing ornate detail and magical aura. Upon its release, the card was received primarily as a niche tool for casual play and limited formats, noted by players for its flavor text and ability to provide a defensive boost within the specific mechanical framework of the expansion.
