Where it came from
Released in early 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Phyrexia: All Will Be One, this enchantment card serves as a central thematic piece for the set. The set depicts the final stages of the Phyrexian invasion of the multiverse, focusing on the dark transformation of the plane of Mirrodin. The card's mechanics and flavor were specifically designed to represent the inevitable and overwhelming nature of the Phyrexian collective, rewarding players for dealing damage to opponents by triggering additional damage instances.
The artwork for this card was commissioned from Igor Kieryluk, an artist noted for his contributions to the darker aesthetic of modern Magic sets. Kieryluk aimed to visualize the chilling concept of 'compleation,' using visceral imagery to convey the idea of systemic assimilation. Upon its release, the card gained significant attention in competitive formats for its synergistic potential with cards that deal multiple small increments of damage, making it a highly discussed item among players and card collectors alike.
