Where it came from
The All Will Be One Secret Lair drop was released by Wizards of the Coast in early 2023 as part of a limited-time print-on-demand series for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to celebrate the return to the plane of New Phyrexia, a central narrative arc in the game's long-running lore centered on a biomechanical faction seeking to perfect all life through conversion. The collection features thematic art treatments that emphasize the grotesque, high-contrast aesthetic synonymous with the Phyrexians.
The visual direction for these cards was crafted to reflect the glistening, oil-slicked nature of the setting, utilizing experimental or stylized artistic interpretations that differ from the standard card art found in booster packs. By commissioning varied illustrators, the design team aimed to capture the invasive, technological dread of the faction, resulting in a reception among players that favored its high-concept, distinct aesthetic over traditional high-fantasy illustrations.
