Allosaurus Rider

Allosaurus Rider was originally released in the 2006 Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to evoke the flavor of the older Ice Age block. It was created as a high-mana green creature that utilized the pitch mechanic, allowing players to cast it for free by exiling two green cards from their hand, a design choice intended to reward players for maintaining a specific density of green cards in their deck.

The card was illustrated by Jeremy Jarvis, whose work often leaned into the visceral, prehistoric aesthetic required for the creature's lore. While it initially saw modest play in niche formats, it gained significant notoriety in later years within the Modern format as a core component of combo decks that utilized its high mana cost to bypass restrictions on other spells, cementing its status as a notable example of how free casting mechanics can warp game balance.
