Where it came from
Allosaurus Shepherd was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Jumpstart. Designed as a powerful tribal enabler for green decks, the card was created to provide a specialized tool for Elf-themed strategies, offering both an uncounterable status for green spells and a potent ability to turn small creatures into massive threats. Its inclusion in Jumpstart, a set focused on fast, thematic play experiences, highlighted Wizards of the Coast's effort to introduce high-impact cards directly into legacy formats.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the primal connection between the shepherd and its prehistoric mount. The aesthetic leans into the lush, wild nature of Magic's green-aligned planes, emphasizing the scale of the Allosaurus in relation to its elven companion. Upon release, the card received significant attention from competitive players in the Legacy format, where its ability to protect high-cost spells and dominate the board state solidified its place as a staple in various green-based archetypes.
