Where it came from
Alrund, God of the Cosmos was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kaldheim, a set heavily inspired by Norse mythology and Viking culture. This specific card represents the dual-faced mechanic featured in the set, where Alrund serves as a legendary creature on the front and his avian companion, Hakka, Whispering Raven, occupies the reverse. The design team sought to capture the theme of divine wisdom and foresight, positioning Alrund as a high-mana utility card that rewards players for filling their hands with cards.
This particular variant, collector number 40s, is a promotional version of the card featuring unique, stylized artwork distinct from the standard set printing. These promos were distributed through various organized play channels and promotional events associated with the Kaldheim release. The aesthetic direction aimed to evoke the feeling of ancient runic carvings and ethereal magic, receiving praise from collectors who favor the alternate, thematic art treatments that define the Kaldheim showcase frames.
