What it does
Counter target spell. Choose 1, 2, or 3 at random. Its controller mills that many cards, then exiles cards from the top of their library until they exile a nonland card with a different name than that spell. They may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then they put the exiled cards on the bottom of their library in a random order.

Where it came from
Tibalt's Trickery was released in early 2021 as part of the Kaldheim expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare red spell, it was designed as a chaotic counter-magic effect, allowing a player to counter a spell and replace it with a random one from the top of the deck. This promo version, numbered 153p, was distributed through official promotional channels, such as Friday Night Magic events or as part of Wizards of the Coast's organized play support.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Campbell White, who captured the trickster nature of the Planeswalker Tibalt in a style consistent with the Norse-inspired, icy aesthetic of the Kaldheim plane. Within the community, the card quickly became infamous for its potential to trigger high-impact, unfair plays in competitive formats like Modern and Commander, leading to significant debate regarding its design impact on the game's balance.
