Where it came from
Altered Ego was introduced in the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander set, a supplemental release for the Magic: The Gathering card game designed to integrate with the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. The card was created to offer players a flexible utility creature that mirrors the academic theme of the set, emphasizing the core Simic color identity of blue and green which often focuses on cloning and stat modification.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and stylized aesthetic to depict the shifting nature of the creature. Within the competitive landscape, it was received as a highly versatile inclusion for Commander decks, valued primarily for its ability to enter the battlefield as a copy of another creature while retaining the potential for additional scaling through its X-cost ability.
