What it does

Flying, haste

Whenever Excava attacks, return up to one target artifact, creature, or non-Aura enchantment card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield with a finality counter on it. It's a 1/1 Spirit creature with flying in addition to its other types. (If a creature with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Excava, the Risen Past was released in 2013 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander set. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this card was introduced during a period when the company was expanding its focus on the Commander format, creating unique legendary creatures that offered specialized mechanics to encourage diverse deck building. As a Boros-colored creature, it was crafted to emphasize aggressive playstyles, specifically through the use of the unleash mechanic, which allows the creature to enter the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter at the cost of being unable to block.

The artistic direction for Excava features the work of illustrator Steve Argyle, who depicted the character as a formidable, skeletal figure rising from the earth. The design was intended to capture the flavor of a necromantic warrior aligned with the chaotic, militaristic themes of the Boros Legion. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to aggressive Commander strategies, valued by players for its ability to grant the haste keyword to other creatures with +1/+1 counters, effectively bridging the gap between offensive board pressure and tactical synergy.
