Where it came from
Ammit Eternal was released in July 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Amonkhet, the card reflects the dark, Egyptian-inspired themes of the expansion, where the dragon god Nicol Bolas orchestrates a catastrophic end to a civilization he had previously shaped. The creature serves as a mechanical representation of Ammit, a mythological figure tasked with consuming the unworthy, integrated into the game's high-fantasy narrative.
The card was illustrated by Daarken, a prolific artist in the Magic: The Gathering community. The design seeks to capture the oppressive and terrifying nature of a soul-devouring entity through its imposing visual silhouette and mechanical ability, which grows in power as players cast spells. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its efficient, aggressive stat line, becoming a staple in various deck archetypes focused on black-aligned creature combat during its time in the Standard format.
