Where it came from
Amphibian Downpour was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce powerful new cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing the standard Standard-legal release cycle. The card serves as an instant-speed removal spell, reflecting the set's focus on high-impact utility cards that reward players for managing their resources and interaction during complex gameplay turns.
The card features artwork by illustrator Manuel Castañón, who crafted a scene depicting a deluge of frogs descending upon a battlefield. The design reflects the 'frog' tribal themes present throughout the set, leaning into the whimsical yet mechanically disruptive nature of blue-aligned creature effects. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its efficiency in tempo-based decks, solidifying its place in the Modern format's evolving metagame.
