Provenance

Where it came from

Ancestral Recall was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the foundational trading card game designed by Richard Garfield. As one of the Power Nine, a group of cards widely considered the most powerful in the game's history, it was designed to provide an unparalleled advantage by allowing a player to draw three cards for only a single blue mana. Its inclusion in the earliest sets reflected a period of experimental game design where the long-term impact of such efficient resource generation was not yet fully understood by the developers.

The card features iconic artwork by Christopher Rush, who illustrated many of the game's most memorable early cards. Rush’s visual style for the piece—depicting a figure reaching into a swirling, ethereal pool—captured the mystical and high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the game's debut. While initially received as simply one of many rare cards in a new hobby, it quickly became a centerpiece of competitive play, ultimately leading to its restriction or banning in nearly every major tournament format to maintain game balance.
