What it does
green mana: Regenerate this creature. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, instead tap it, remove it from combat, and heal all damage on it.)
The Phyrexian killing machines couldn't have known the seriousness of their mistake in wounding the ape—they'd never seen it angry.

Where it came from
The Ancient Silverback was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny expansion, the concluding set of the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to address power-level imbalances from the preceding sets, introducing mechanics like echo that forced players to make strategic decisions regarding resource management over multiple turns. The expansion remains a significant piece of the game's history for its focus on artifact synergies and its distinct aesthetic style that defined late 90s fantasy card illustration.
The artwork for Ancient Silverback was created by artist Daren Bader, who contributed extensively to the game during this era. Bader’s depiction of the creature emphasizes a sense of primeval, imposing strength, utilizing the rich, saturated color palettes characteristic of Magic cards from the Urza block. Upon release, the card was received as a solid, reliable creature for green-aligned decks, praised for its ability to regenerate, which provided players with a resilient defensive tool during the mid-to-late game stages.
