What it does
green mana: Regenerate this creature. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, instead tap it, remove it from combat, and heal all damage on it.)
The Phyrexian killing machines couldn't have known the seriousness of their mistake in wounding the ape—they'd never seen it angry.

Where it came from
Ancient Silverback was released in 2002 as part of the Seventh Edition core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was significant for being the first to feature the modern card frame design, which transitioned from the original layout to a sleeker, more streamlined aesthetic meant to improve readability and visual impact. As a core set, Seventh Edition functioned as a cornerstone of the game, reintroducing essential mechanics and iconic creatures to a new generation of players.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated illustrators in the game's history, known for his work on iconic cards like Black Lotus. His design for Ancient Silverback emphasizes the raw, primal power of the creature, fitting the green color identity of Magic, which focuses on nature and gargantuan beasts. The card was designed to be a resilient threat, utilizing a regenerative ability that allows it to survive combat, a thematic design choice that reflects the rugged endurance of the ape it portrays.
