Angelic Purge

Angelic Purge was originally printed in the Shadows over Innistrad set in 2016, designed to reflect the escalating atmospheric horror and the corruption of the plane’s protective forces. The card illustrates a moment of brutal theological conflict, depicting a masked cathar performing a ritualistic excision of a threat, embodying the set's themes of sacrifice and the unsettling transformation of once-holy entities. The version appearing in Innistrad Remastered serves as a curated reprint, intended to preserve the mechanical identity of the card while reintroducing the classic aesthetics of the Innistrad block to a new generation of players.

The art for this card, by Johannes Voss, emphasizes the stark contrast between the rigid, mechanical nature of the Avacynian church and the visceral reality of the terrors they combat. Voss employed a focused, emotive style that highlights the light-based magic of the setting, intending to capture both the grim resolve of the human resistance and the tragic necessity of their actions. Within the wider landscape of Magic: The Gathering, the card is recognized for its versatility as a removal spell, offering a tactical trade-off that requires players to sacrifice a permanent to exile a troublesome threat.
