Where it came from
Anointer Priest was released as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2017. The card depicts a white-aligned cleric from the Egyptian-inspired plane of Amonkhet, designed to emphasize the set's themes of eternal service and the 'embrace of the afterlife' under the god Oketra. It serves as a mechanical utility piece that rewards players for creature-based strategies by providing lifegain whenever a creature enters the battlefield.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive, character-focused style. Her design captures the stoic and ritualistic aesthetic of the Amonkhet priesthood, utilizing the set's gold-and-white color palette to convey a sense of divine order. Upon its release, the card was well-received by limited-format players for its ability to stabilize life totals in the aggressive environment of the set.
