Provenance

Where it came from

The Angel of Sanctions token was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet set for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to represent the physical manifestation of the Embalm ability found on the titular Angel of Sanctions card, allowing players to create a copy of the creature when it is resurrected from the graveyard. The aesthetic was developed by the Wizards of the Coast art team to reflect the harsh, golden-hued, Egyptian-inspired environment of the Amonkhet plane.

The illustration is credited to artist Magali Villeneuve, who is known for her work on numerous iconic fantasy figures. She designed the token to maintain continuity with the main card's appearance, focusing on the imposing, mummified aesthetic that defines the set's unique visual language. Upon its release, the token was widely praised by players for its atmospheric quality, which successfully captured the theme of eternal servitude that characterizes the Amonkhet narrative.
