Where it came from
Anticipate was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Fate Reforged set, serving as a functional reprint of similar cantrip-style spells that allow players to look at the top cards of their library. By the time it appeared in Core Set 2020 as card number 45, the card had established itself as a staple for blue-aligned decks seeking card selection and consistency in the early stages of a match.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose style often emphasizes fluid motion and ethereal lighting. In this piece, Voss depicts a mage in a state of high awareness, effectively visualizing the mechanical intent of the card: peering into the near future to prepare for upcoming threats. It was received as a reliable, balanced tool for competitive play, prized by players for its low mana cost and utility.
