Where it came from
Ferocious Pup was released in July 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as a foundational entry point for new players while providing mechanical depth for veterans, focusing on a balance of evergreen themes and specific tribal synergies. The card was specifically crafted to support the green color identity, offering a creature that provides board presence through the generation of a Wolf token upon entering the battlefield.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Alayna Danner, who rendered the pup with a distinct emphasis on the creature’s fierce yet playful aesthetic. The design reflects the visual language of Core Set 2020, which sought to blend iconic fantasy tropes with modern card frame sensibilities. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, low-cost utility piece for Limited formats, noted by players for its ability to provide two bodies for the price of one, making it a reliable staple for early-game stabilization.
