Provenance

Where it came from

Aphetto Vulture was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught set, the first expansion in the Onslaught block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Otaria, the expansion focused heavily on tribal themes, with the Vulture serving as a common-rarity creature within the Zombie tribe. The card was designed to support the set's graveyard-recursion mechanics, allowing players to recover resources by returning creature cards from their graveyard to their hand.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's early history, known for his work on the original Black Lotus. Rush’s depiction of the vulture captures the decaying, atmospheric aesthetic of the Onslaught block's undead aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece in limited play formats, prized by players for its ability to generate incremental advantage in grindy, board-heavy games.
