Provenance

Where it came from

The Aplan Mortarium card, numbered 568 in the Doctor Who CCG, depicts the homeworld of the Aplans as featured in the television series. The card was released as part of the broader Doctor Who Customizable Card Game, which was designed to translate the long-running science fiction franchise into a strategic tabletop format. The game sought to capture the diverse lore of the series, drawing upon both classic and then-modern iterations of the Doctor's adventures to build its mechanical depth.

The art and design of the set were intended to reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the show's various eras, with cards like the Aplan Mortarium serving to flesh out the expansive universe of alien worlds and lore. The set was produced during a period of renewed interest in the franchise, and while the game experienced a dedicated following, it remains a distinct artifact of the 2000s era of licensed card games. It is regarded by collectors today primarily as an illustrative piece of Doctor Who memorabilia rather than a mainstay of competitive tournament play.
