Where it came from
Apostle of Purifying Light was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. This set was designed to be accessible to newer players while providing a balanced environment for established competitive formats. The card was crafted to serve as a tactical hate-piece against black-aligned strategies, reflecting the long-standing color pie philosophy of Magic where white represents protective, righteous forces explicitly opposed to the corrupting influence of black mana.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into high-fantasy, epic iconography. For this piece, Kieryluk focused on the themes of blinding luminescence and armored resilience, aiming to capture a sense of unwavering authority. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective sideboard option in competitive play, particularly valued for its versatility in both offensive pressure and defensive utility against graveyard-centric decks.
