Provenance

Where it came from

Apostle's Blessing was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicted the total victory of the mechanical Phyrexian faction over the plane of Mirrodin, and the card's mechanics reflect this lore by allowing a player to protect a permanent or player from a specific color using Phyrexian mana. This design choice enabled decks of any color to cast the instant by paying life instead of mana, a hallmark of the set's aggressive and adaptive flavor.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Brad Rigney, who was tasked with visualizing the twisted, pseudo-religious themes of the Phyrexian regime. Rigney focused on the chilling aesthetic of 'compleation,' portraying a supplicant receiving a warped blessing. The illustration was noted by players for its stark contrast and ability to convey the grotesque, industrial horror that defined the New Phyrexia visual identity, fitting seamlessly into the set's dark, transformative narrative.
