Where it came from
Appeal // Authority was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. As a split card, it embodies the set's mechanics focusing on the destructive arrival of the elder dragon Nicol Bolas on the plane of Amonkhet. The card was designed to reflect the tension between the deceptive religious structure of the plane and the eventual revelation of the gods' true, grim purposes.
The artwork was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander, who utilized the set's signature golden, Egyptian-inspired aesthetic to convey the duality of the card's effects. Appeal focuses on the combat prowess and fervor of the plane's recruits, while Authority represents the institutional control exerted by the regime. It was received by players as a versatile limited-format tool that emphasized the tactical aggression encouraged during the set's play cycle.
