Where it came from
Appetite for Brains was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the set's narrative focus on the desperate struggle for survival against encroaching supernatural threats. Mechanically, it serves as a discard spell, allowing players to exile a card from an opponent's hand to disrupt their strategy during the game.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Volkan Baga, who is recognized for his detailed work across numerous Magic sets. Baga’s composition captures the grim atmosphere of the Innistrad setting, emphasizing the visceral nature of the creature depicted. Upon its release, the card was evaluated by the competitive community for its utility in specific sideboard matchups, becoming a functional staple for players looking to combat decks reliant on high-cost threats.
