Apprentice Sharpshooter

Apprentice Sharpshooter was originally released as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set in 2021, later receiving a specialized monochrome treatment for the Innistrad: Double Feature release in 2022. This set was designed to combine cards from both Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow into a singular, high-contrast, black-and-white aesthetic, echoing the classic look of gothic horror cinema. The creature itself embodies the rustic, survivalist theme of the Innistrad setting, depicting a human archer training to defend their village against the encroaching supernatural threats that define the plane.

The artwork was created by Steve Prescott, a veteran illustrator in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem known for his dynamic, slightly stylized character designs. For this piece, Prescott focused on capturing a sense of focused determination, using the stark, silver-screen-inspired filter of the Double Feature set to emphasize the interplay of light and shadow on the character's equipment. While it serves as a functional common in gameplay, the card is primarily noted by collectors for how its specific monochromatic printing elevates the atmospheric tone of the original illustration.
