Provenance

Where it came from

Apprentice Sorcerer was released in 1998 as part of the Portal Second Age set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed specifically to be an entry-level product, featuring simplified mechanics and a streamlined rule set intended to introduce new players to the game’s fantasy world. Its inclusion reflects the broader aesthetic of the set, which drew heavily from high-fantasy archetypes common in late 1990s gaming.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent contributors to the game's early visual identity. Rush opted for a classic depiction of a burgeoning magic-user, focusing on the whimsical yet scholarly tropes associated with traditional sorcery. While the card is often overlooked by competitive players due to its limited mechanical utility, it remains a nostalgic piece for those who began their journey with the Portal series.
