Where it came from
Arashin Sovereign was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir set for Magic: The Gathering. This specific card, numbered 212s, served as a promotional foil version distributed through events at local game stores to coincide with the set's release. The card was designed to highlight the Dromoka clan, one of the five dragon-led factions on the plane of Tarkir, emphasizing the theme of life-gain and sturdy, resilient creature types.
The artwork was created by illustrator Raymond Swanland, who is known for his dynamic, high-contrast style that often utilizes sharp angles and intense lighting. Swanland intended to capture the majestic and imposing nature of the dragon, positioning it as a powerful aerial protector. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid mid-range dragon, noted primarily for its ability to bolster board presence through its triggered lifelink and defensive stats in the Limited format.
