Provenance

Where it came from

Arcbound Slith was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced the modular mechanic, which allowed artifact creatures to transfer their +1/+1 counters to other artifact creatures upon death, a design choice intended to emphasize the relentless, scavenging nature of the metal-themed plane of Mirrodin. This card, designed as a rare, functioned as a low-cost, aggressive threat capable of growing stronger with each combat phase.

The artwork was provided by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator in the Magic community known for his gritty, metallic aesthetic. Walker designed the creature to look like an assembled, multi-limbed entity made of scavenged scrap, fitting the set’s lore of a world dominated by raw materials and metal. While not a dominant force in competitive constructed formats, the card remains a notable example of the early experimental design phase for artifact-heavy themes in the game.
