Arcum's Astrolabe // Arcum's Astrolabe

Arcum's Astrolabe was originally introduced as a common artifact in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Modern Horizons. The card design pays homage to Arcum Dagsson, a legendary artificer from the lore of the plane of Dominaria, and its mechanical function allows players to filter mana while drawing a card, which proved exceptionally potent in competitive formats. The artwork for this specific iteration comes from the Modern Horizons Art Series, which features high-quality, frame-less reproductions of the original digital paintings commissioned for the set.

The illustration was crafted by artist Titus Lunter, who sought to capture the intricate, celestial nature of the artifact. Lunter’s design emphasizes the astrolabe as a complex, glowing navigational tool, utilizing deep blues and gold highlights to convey a sense of ancient, magical technology. Upon its release, the card became a focal point of discussion within the player community due to its significant influence on the balance of the Modern format, eventually leading to its restriction in several tournament environments.
