Where it came from
Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness, appears as a card in the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x Final Fantasy Commander set, representing a pivotal character from the Shadowbringers expansion of Final Fantasy XIV. The card was created as part of a crossover collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix, intended to bridge the narrative depth of the video game franchise with the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering.
The artistic design for the card focuses on capturing Ardbert's grim, weathered aesthetic as a fallen hero burdened by his role as the Warrior of Darkness. The illustration employs the dark, atmospheric color palette characteristic of the First, emphasizing his journey and internal struggle. The card was received by the gaming community as a notable homage to his complex character arc, balancing his tragic backstory with his tactical utility in the commander format.
