Where it came from
Aretopolis was released in 2016 as part of the Planechase Anthology, a comprehensive collection designed to consolidate the various Planes cards introduced throughout the history of Magic: The Gathering. This specific card represents a plane that was originally debuted in the Planechase (2012 Edition) expansion, which sought to bring a chaotic, shifting dimension to the standard card game format by allowing players to travel between different environments with unique rulesets.
The art and design of Aretopolis reflect the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game's multiverse, focusing on a sprawling, bureaucratic city-state that imposes specific mechanical restrictions on players. The visual direction for cards in this set was led by the Wizards of the Coast creative team, aiming to evoke a sense of deep lore and strategic complexity. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players who utilized the Planechase format to inject unpredictability and thematic depth into their multiplayer sessions.
