Where it came from
The Armageddon Clock was originally printed in the 1994 Summer Magic expansion, a set colloquially known as Edgar. This set was produced as a replacement for the defective Revised Edition, intended to correct color saturation and printing errors found in the earlier release. Due to a chaotic production process and a massive warehouse recall, the vast majority of the print run was destroyed, leaving the surviving cards as some of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts in the game's history.
The card features artwork by Amy Weber, one of the original illustrators for the Magic: The Gathering base set. Her design for the Armageddon Clock leans into the gothic and apocalyptic aesthetic that defined the game's early identity, utilizing a striking, foreboding visual to mirror the card's function of incrementally increasing global damage. While the card is mechanically niche, its place within the Summer Magic set has cemented it as a piece of trading card ephemera that marks a turbulent era in the publisher's early corporate management.
