Provenance

Where it came from

Armageddon Clock was first introduced in the Fourth Edition of Magic: The Gathering, released in 1995. This set was a landmark release as it was the first base set to feature updated card frames and a consolidated pool of cards from the earlier Revised, Legends, and The Dark sets. The card was designed to function as an artifact that progressively drains life from all players, creating a high-stakes countdown for games that might otherwise stall.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was one of the original illustrators for the game. His work on this piece captures the ominous nature of a ticking doomsday device, fitting the aesthetic of early Magic art which often leaned into dark fantasy and visceral conceptual design. It is remembered by players for its ability to drastically shorten the duration of a match, embodying the chaotic and aggressive playstyle that defined the mid-90s era of the game.
