Where it came from
The Armed card was released in 1995 as part of the Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart set, a collectible card game produced by Fleer. This set was designed to serve as an introductory entry point for players, utilizing a streamlined ruleset intended to capture the growing interest in trading card games during the mid-nineties. The game featured artwork taken directly from the extensive Marvel archives, leaning heavily on the classic aesthetic of 1990s comic book illustration to appeal to established fans of the source material.
The card itself functions as an accessory or equipment card within the game's mechanics, intended to bolster a character's capabilities during gameplay. The design aesthetic reflects the high-contrast, kinetic style prevalent in Marvel editorial art of that era. Upon its release, the Jumpstart set was positioned as a budget-friendly way to engage with the Marvel license, though it ultimately faced stiff competition from more established gaming systems, leading to a relatively brief period of widespread circulation.
