Where it came from
Armor of Thorns was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a green enchantment that provides a power boost and damage-reflection ability, it exemplifies the set’s focus on elemental themes and the mechanics of trade-offs. The set was notable for moving away from the complex layering of previous expansions, aiming for a more streamlined, cohesive gameplay experience that emphasized the flavor of the plane of Jamuraa.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work defined much of the visual identity of the mid-90s Magic era. Hudson utilized a distinct, illustrative style that prioritized clear thematic imagery, depicting the visceral, defensive nature of the armor. The card was well-received by players of the time for its specific utility in combat-heavy green decks, remaining a recognized, if niche, piece of the Mirage card pool.
