Where it came from
Armored Griffin was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase 2012 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced various pre-constructed decks designed to be played with the 'planar' format, which adds randomized environmental modifiers to standard gameplay. As a common card within the Night of the Ninja deck, the creature serves as an efficient white mana-aligned flyer intended to provide repeatable defensive support in the multi-player formats that define Planechase.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic, painterly style that often emphasizes action and texture. In this depiction, Moeller focuses on the tactile reality of the griffin’s barding, balancing the creature’s predatory anatomy with the metallic weight of its armor. The piece was received as a functional, well-integrated element of the set, aligning with the tradition of mythological beast depictions in fantasy trading card games.
