Armored Griffin

The Armored Griffin was originally released in the 2009 Planechase release, a multiplayer-focused expansion for Magic: The Gathering that introduced the planar deck mechanic. The card was designed to support the White-aligned aggressive strategies prevalent in the set, functioning as a mid-cost creature with flying that could be bolstered by the mechanics of the accompanying plane cards. It serves as a classic example of Wizards of the Coast's approach to drafting supplemental sets, which prioritize thematic cohesion and support for multiplayer formats over the complexity found in standard booster sets.

The artwork for the piece, provided by illustrator Chippy, emphasizes the high-fantasy aesthetic signature to the Magic: The Gathering brand during the late 2000s. The design captures the creature in a dynamic pose, utilizing heavy armor plating to visually communicate its defensive capabilities within the game’s combat system. While the card was later reprinted in the 2016 Planechase Anthology to provide players with easier access to older casual staples, it remains a recognized, functional component of the set’s white-themed preconstructed decks.
