What it does

Whenever a creature deals damage to you, destroy it.

Ashnod served as Mishra's confidante while he led Fallaji weapons development before the Brothers' War. Whereas Mishra works in metals and stone, however, Ashnod works in living flesh. She sees all living things as prototype machines; her "improvements" to them make her as feared by allies as by enemies.

Provenance

Where it came from

Ashnod is part of the Vanguard series, a specialized set of oversized cards released by Wizards of the Coast in 1997. Designed to function as an alternative rule set for Magic: The Gathering, these cards represented iconic characters from the game's deep lore, allowing players to incorporate legendary figures into their decks with unique, game-altering abilities.

The character of Ashnod was illustrated by Christopher Rush, a foundational artist in the early years of the game. The design captures the artificer's ruthless aesthetic, drawing on her history as a powerful advisor to the villainous Mishra during the Brothers' War. The series was experimental, aiming to add a narrative layer to casual play, and it remains a curiosity for collectors who value its distinct oversized format and the atmospheric art style of the late nineties.
