What it does

If a creature you control would deal damage, it deals double that damage instead.

Both complement and antithesis to his older brother Urza, Mishra also mastered the intricacies of artifice. It was Mishra's strength that first gave rise to the massive Phyrexian war engines on Dominaria, and it was his weakness that pushed him, Urza, and Dominaria itself to the point of annihilation.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1997 as part of the Vanguard series, the Mishra card represents a unique experiment by Wizards of the Coast to introduce non-standard gameplay mechanics into Magic: The Gathering. These oversized cards were designed to be used in a variant format where players utilized avatar cards to modify their starting life totals and hand sizes, reflecting the power of legendary characters from the game's lore.

The artwork was provided by Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game's debut set. Maddocks chose to depict Mishra, the legendary artificer, with a focus on his iconic industrial aesthetic and dark, mechanical presence. The illustration was intended to capture the character's obsession with machines and his pivotal role in the Brother's War, and it is remembered by long-term collectors for its grim, textured style that defined the early visual language of the game.
