Provenance

Where it came from

Ashnod's Battle Gear was originally released in the 1994 Antiquities expansion, a set centered on the lore of the Brothers' War. It depicts the mechanical augmentations used by the artificer Ashnod, a central figure in the conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. The card was later reprinted in the 1995 Fourth Edition, which served as the first core set to incorporate cards from expansions rather than relying solely on the original Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited printings.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, an artist celebrated for his distinctive, intricate style that defined much of the early Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. His design for the Battle Gear emphasizes the brutal, industrial nature of the Antiquities setting, portraying the equipment as both formidable and unwieldy. While the card is often viewed as a niche utility artifact, its inclusion in Fourth Edition ensured it remained accessible to a wider player base as the game transitioned into its established modern era.
