Where it came from
Ashnod's Altar originated as an uncommon card in the 1994 Antiquities expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to represent a ritualistic sacrifice mechanic tied to the lore of the Brothers' War. The card depicts a mechanism used by the artificer Ashnod to harvest life force from the living to power her complex machinery, becoming a cornerstone of synergistic deck building for its ability to convert creatures into colorless mana.
The Secret Lair version, collector number 1679, was released as part of the specialized 'Artist Series' drops. This iteration features updated, highly stylized art that emphasizes the gruesome, mechanical nature of the Altar's function, moving away from the original minimalist aesthetic to reflect the high-fantasy illustrative trends of modern Magic: The Gathering. It is sought after by players who favor the card's enduring utility alongside a more contemporary visual presentation.
