Where it came from
The Assassin Initiate card was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond collaboration with the Assassin's Creed franchise in 2024. Designed to integrate the stealth-based gameplay mechanics of the video game series into the card game's engine, the card represents the foundational members of the Assassin Brotherhood. The design aesthetic draws heavily from the historical settings and iconography synonymous with the series, focusing on themes of anonymity and tactical agility.
The artwork and mechanics were developed to reflect the initiate's role as a character who gains strength through specific board states, mirroring the leveling and progression systems found in the source material. Within the set, the card was received as a functional, low-cost utility piece for players building tribal decks around the Assassin creature type. Its release was timed to coincide with the broader multimedia celebration of the franchise's multi-generational narrative.
