Where it came from
The Assault Intercessor card was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanical framework of the world's most popular trading card game. The card was designed to reflect the aggressive, close-quarters combat style of Space Marine Assault Intercessors, utilizing the squad-based mechanics common to the faction within the game's broader meta.
The illustration for this card, credited to artist Games Workshop, draws directly from the official Warhammer 40,000 miniatures range. The design captures the iconic power armor silhouette and the violent motion of chainsword-wielding Astartes, maintaining visual continuity with the existing tabletop franchise. Upon release, the card was well-received by both Magic players and Warhammer enthusiasts for its thematic accuracy and its ability to effectively translate the high-octane combat ethos of the Imperium of Man onto the tabletop.
