Where it came from
The Assault Intercessor card was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, a high-profile collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. This deck series represented a significant intersection of two major hobbyist communities, bringing the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanical framework of Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to capture the aggressive, melee-focused nature of the Space Marine units, utilizing the iconic art style associated with modern Warhammer miniatures.
The illustration for the card was executed to reflect the brutal, high-fantasy industrialism characteristic of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. It serves as a visual representation of a tactical squad member, emphasizing the heavy armor and chainsword equipment familiar to players of the tabletop wargame. Upon release, the set was well-received for its fidelity to the source material, with the card art being praised for its integration of the Magic card frame with the intense, saturated palette typical of the science-fiction universe.
