Where it came from
Atemsis, All-Seeing was introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2019. The card was designed as a mythic rare sphinx, embodying the color blue's focus on card advantage and complex win conditions. Its unique ability to eliminate an opponent if a player can demonstrate cards with different mana costs in their hand represents the game's shift toward high-reward, skill-intensive mechanics that reward deck-building diversity.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was crafted by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator in the fantasy gaming sphere. Villeneuve sought to depict Atemsis as an imposing and intellectual entity, utilizing intricate patterns and a regal color palette to emphasize the sphinx's connection to hidden knowledge. Upon release, the promo version became a sought-after piece for collectors who appreciated its unique holographic treatment and the distinct visual identity Villeneuve brought to the Core Set's promotional card cycle.
