Where it came from
The Augur of Autumn was released as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set in 2021, a gothic horror-themed expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific version is a promo card, featuring a unique art style consistent with the 'Eternal Night' treatment found throughout the set. This aesthetic was designed to evoke classic black-and-white horror cinema, utilizing high-contrast ink-wash illustrations to emphasize the somber, moonlit atmosphere of the Innistrad plane.
The illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who leaned into the card’s identity as a druidic figure connected to the rhythms of nature. By stripping away traditional color palettes in favor of stark monochrome, the design team aimed to distinguish these special promos as highly collectible artifacts. The card was well-received by players for both its powerful gameplay utility in green-aligned decks and its distinct, evocative visual language that deviates from standard card frame conventions.
