Aura Blast

Aura Blast was released in February 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion, the second set in the Invasion block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set during the Phyrexian invasion of the plane of Dominaria, the card reflects the desperate struggle of the coalition forces attempting to repel the mechanical horrors. Its design was intended to provide white-aligned decks with a versatile tool that combined card draw with targeted removal of enchantments, a staple function of the color in the game’s early mechanics.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Rebecca Guay, whose distinctive, ethereal watercolor style was a hallmark of the game during this era. Guay’s work on Aura Blast centers on a luminous, focused discharge of energy, capturing the spiritual resilience associated with white magic. Upon release, the card was generally viewed by players as a niche utility option, appreciated more for its artistic aesthetic than for high-level competitive dominance, remaining a classic example of the atmospheric world-building that defined the Invasion era.
