Provenance

Where it came from

Meteor Crater was released in February 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Planeshift served as the second set in the Invasion block, a storyline-heavy narrative arc centered on the Phyrexian invasion of the plane of Dominaria. The card was designed to support the set’s focus on multi-colored themes, providing players with a utility land capable of producing any color of mana, provided that color was already represented by a permanent on the battlefield.

The artwork was commissioned from John Avon, one of the most prolific and celebrated landscape artists in the game's history. Avon was tasked with illustrating the titular impact site, and he utilized his signature ethereal lighting and expansive perspective to convey the geological scale of the crater. The design aimed to balance a sense of desolation with the magical potential inherent in the location, and it remains a favored piece among collectors who prize Avon’s contributions to the game’s aesthetic identity.
